Helene Wecker
1975
Helene Wecker creates historical fantasy that brings Jewish and Arab folklore into an immigrant-era New York setting. The Hidden Palace continues the intertwined story of Chava, a golem, and Ahmad, a jinni, carrying their world into the opening decades of the twentieth century and beyond Manhattan to the Middle East. It follows The Golem and the Jinni and now stands as the middle volume of the author's Golem and Jinni trilogy. Harper published the novel, while Wecker's official bibliography identifies The Gates of Midnight as the concluding volume. Her debut received a Mythopoeic Award, the VCU Cabell First Novelist Award, and the Harold U. Ribalow Prize. Wecker studied English at Carleton College and earned an MFA in fiction writing from Columbia University.
