Henry Brooke was an eighteenth-century Irish novelist, poet, playwright, and political pamphleteer whose career ranged from stage drama to religious verse. Redemption: A Poem is the long poem he published in 1772, late in a body of work that began with Universal Beauty and included the multi-volume novel The Fool of Quality. The Spirit of Party: History of the Knight of the Bridge belongs to a political publication Brooke issued anonymously in separate chapters during the 1750s. Its second chapter addressed the people of Ireland and used polemical prose to enter an immediate public controversy. Brooke’s political positions changed over time, and his later writing supported relief from penal restrictions affecting Irish Catholics. These works reveal markedly different aspects of his authorship: one considers redemption through religious poetry, while the other intervenes in Irish political debate through a fictionalized knight and partisan argument.
