George Thomas Stokes was an Irish clergyman, historian, and antiquarian whose scholarship often centred on ecclesiastical and local history. The Dictionary of National Biography records his long association with Trinity College Dublin, where he studied and later taught, as well as his service in the Church of Ireland. Pococke’s Tour in Ireland in 1752 presents the Irish travel journal of Richard Pococke, with Stokes serving as editor rather than the original traveller or diarist. The Corpus of Electronic Texts identifies the 1891 printed edition and preserves Stokes's editorial introduction alongside Pococke's observations. That role suits Stokes's documented interest in historical records: he supplied framing and explanatory work that helped make an eighteenth-century account accessible to later readers. The volume therefore belongs with his antiquarian activity and historical editing, while its underlying narrative remains Pococke's record of places, institutions, landscapes, and encounters during the tour.
