George Park Fisher was a Yale theologian and historian whose books joined institutional scholarship with clear instruction. He entered Yale as a student, later taught divinity and church history there, and became emeritus professor after four decades on the faculty. Life of Benjamin Silliman grew from close access to Silliman's family papers and appeared in two volumes in 1866, presenting the chemist, geologist, and Yale professor within the development of American science. Manual Of Christian Evidences, published near the end of Fisher's teaching career, condensed historical and philosophical arguments about belief for classroom use. These titles show the two sides of his method: documentary biography and structured theological exposition. Fisher also wrote histories of the Reformation, Christian doctrine, and the church, edited the New Englander, and served as president of the American Historical Association. His work reflects the broad nineteenth-century university role in which teaching, religious history, and public scholarship were closely connected.
