Henry Elliot Malden edited historical records and served for many years as an officer of the Royal Historical Society. Educated at Trinity Hall, Cambridge, he became a specialist in English records and Surrey history and acted as the Society’s honorary secretary. The Cely Papers opened the Camden Third Series in 1900, presenting correspondence and memoranda from a family of fifteenth-century wool merchants trading between England and Calais. Malden’s editing made those commercial letters accessible as evidence for late medieval economic and social history. Vienna 1683 is an earlier historical study of the siege and its consequences, focusing on the relief associated with John III Sobieski and Charles of Lorraine. His broader work included English Records, A History of Surrey, and editorship of the Victoria County History of Surrey. Together, The Cely Papers and Vienna 1683 show Malden working across documentary editing, local history, and European political narrative.
