Henry Fawcett combined economics, Liberal politics, reform, and a Cambridge professorship in political economy. John Stuart Mill refers to his contribution to the 1873 collaborative volume John Stuart Mill: His Life and Works, where Fawcett wrote about Mill’s influence at the universities. The book brought together twelve assessments by writers including Herbert Spencer, Frederic Harrison, Henry Trimen, and Fawcett’s wife, Millicent Garrett Fawcett. Fawcett had studied Mill’s political economy and developed his own teaching through A Manual of Political Economy, which appeared in 1863. After losing his sight in an accident, he continued an active academic and parliamentary career, later serving as Postmaster General. He supported expanded educational opportunity, women’s political rights, and reforms intended to widen access to public institutions. John Stuart Mill places Fawcett within a network of Victorian thinkers assessing a major intellectual influence, while his own career joined economic writing with sustained practical politics.
