Henry Lawson was an Australian poet and short-story writer whose spare, direct prose helped define literary images of bush life. Raised in rural New South Wales, he began publishing in the Bulletin during the late 1880s and travelled to drought-stricken Bourke in 1892. That journey sharpened his attention to isolation, itinerant work, mateship, and the material hardship of inland communities. While the Billy Boils, issued by Angus & Robertson in 1896, gathered stories that had often appeared first in newspapers and magazines. Its compact scenes and colloquial dialogue made Lawson's ordinary workers, travellers, and families central to Australian fiction. Humorous Verses represents the comic and satirical side of his poetry, where public characters and everyday frustrations receive a lighter treatment than his bleaker bush narratives. Lawson also wrote the collections On the Track and Over the Sliprails. Across verse and fiction, his strongest work depends on compressed observation, sympathy without sentimentality, and an ear for spoken Australian English.
