About this book

Henry Lawson is the author of On the Track. The preface says that many of the stories in the volume have already appeared in various periodicals, while several now appear in print for the first time. The contents list names, among others, The Songs They used to Sing, A Vision of Sandy Blight and Andy Page's Rival. Public-house people and more diggers drop into the kitchen when Abe sings.

A narrator says, "I rode back that way five years later, from the Never Never." Smith had no time to reorganise, even if he had had the brains to do so, without the assistance of his mate's knowledge of human nature, and he stammers "I beg your pardon, missus."

Henry Lawson

Henry Lawson was an Australian poet and short-story writer whose spare, direct prose helped define literary images of bush life. Raised in rural New South Wales, he began publishing in the Bulletin during the late 1880s and travelled to drought-stricken Bourke in 1892.
