Henry Kendall was a nineteenth-century Australian poet whose work gave forests, rivers, birds, and coastal landscapes a distinctly local lyric voice. Poems and Songs, his first collection, appeared in Sydney in 1862 and included pieces such as “The Muse of Australia” and “Mountains.” The Poems Of Henry Kendall gathers writing from the three volumes issued during his lifetime, early pieces, and material preserved in the Mitchell Library manuscripts. Bertram Stevens supplied the edition's biographical note. Project Gutenberg identifies Kendall with Australian poetry and dates him from 1839 to 1882. His later books included Leaves from Australian Forests and Songs from the Mountains, extending the close attention to place that made his verse important to the development of Australian literature.
