Henry Noel Humphreys combined British illustration, writing, and book design with interests spanning natural history, printing, coins, writing systems, and medieval decoration. His work coincided with a Victorian revival of illumination and with new color-printing methods capable of reproducing decorated pages for study. Specimens of Illuminated Manuscripts of the Middle Ages, From the Sixth to the Sixteenth Century appeared in 1853 as a series of twelve plates rendered in close imitation of selected originals. The volume pairs visual examples with historical explanation, giving readers a chronological view of changes in ornament and manuscript art. Humphreys pursued related aims in The Illuminated Books of the Middle Ages and instructional writing on illumination. Some larger projects involved the architect and designer Owen Jones, whose chromolithographic expertise helped set demanding standards for color reproduction. This book belongs to Humphreys’s effort to make the design history of handwritten books visible through carefully planned printed facsimiles rather than description alone.
