About this book
Moses Quinby signed himself simply a practical bee-keeper, and this 1853 manual, printed in New York by an agricultural publisher, reads like the work of a man who has spent years lifting hives and watching what bees actually do. He sets out the three kinds of bee, then argues his way through hive design, breeding, wax, propolis, robbing, feeding, moth worms and the long chapter on swarming.
A good deal of the book pushes back against the patent hives sold to farmers of his day. Quinby says plainly he has no patent of his own to recommend, prefers a well-made common hive of the right size, and explains how to build glass boxes and an observation hive so a keeper can see inside.
The practical detail still holds up: which flowers feed bees from spring alder to basswood and buckwheat, how to calm a colony with smoke, and what to have ready before a swarm comes out. Beekeepers and readers of farm history will find a clear, opinionated guide.
