Henry Philip Tappan served as an American philosopher, educator, and the first president of the University of Michigan. Trained at Union College and Auburn Theological Seminary, he taught moral and intellectual philosophy before taking the Michigan presidency in 1852. His administration expanded scientific teaching, research facilities, library holdings, and the university's professional programs. The Mutual Responsibiilties of Physicians and the Community grew from an address delivered to the graduating class of Michigan's Medical College on March 27, 1856. Issued in Detroit from the office of the Peninsular Journal of Medicine, the address considered professional ethics and the relationship between medical practitioners and the public they served. Its setting matters: Tappan was then building a university model that placed scientific inquiry beside classical study and public responsibility. The surviving title preserves the historical misspelling Responsibiilties, while contemporary descriptions clarify that responsibilities was intended.
