Hermann Pálsson was an Icelandic scholar, editor, and translator whose work helped bring medieval Icelandic literature to English-language readers. He taught for the University of Edinburgh and collaborated repeatedly with Paul Edwards on saga translations that balanced accessible prose with historical introductions. Gautrek’s Saga appeared in 1968 in the joint volume whose fuller title is Gautrek’s Saga and Other Medieval Tales. Hermann Pálsson and Edwards translated the Icelandic texts and supplied the introduction. University of London Press issued the book, and a New York University Press edition followed for American readers. The collection places the title saga beside related medieval narratives, giving readers a wider view of legendary Scandinavian storytelling, kingship, luck, and social custom. Pálsson’s contribution was therefore both linguistic and interpretive: he helped establish a readable English text while explaining the cultural world behind it. His long scholarly career also included translations and studies of many other Icelandic sagas and early northern traditions.
