Hiram Miner Stanley contributed to early efforts to explain psychology to beginning students. Open Court Publishing Company issued An Outline Sketch in Chicago during 1899, using the fuller arrangement Psychology for Beginners: An Outline Sketch. The forty-four-page primer treats knowing, feeling, will, sensation, perception, memory, ideation, introspection, and special psychology. Contemporary notices in Mind and Nature placed the book among concise introductions to a rapidly developing field. Open Court presented Stanley as a member of the American Psychological Association and emphasized observation and simple experiment instead of excessive instruction. That approach belongs to a period when psychology was establishing itself as a distinct empirical discipline and publishers sought accessible classroom introductions. Later facsimile editions reverse the title order and expand the page count with preliminary or note pages. The stored form An Outline Sketch therefore identifies the work only partially and can conceal both its educational purpose and its original 1899 edition context.
