Howard B. Grose worked across American Baptist ministry, editing, education, hymn writing, and authorship. After graduating from Rochester in 1876, he worked in journalism before entering ordained ministry and later held leadership posts in religious education. His editorial career included service with The Watchman and The Home Mission Monthly, while his books addressed immigration, missions, and church life. Never Man So Spake, published in 1924, belongs to the devotional side of that output and studies the words and teaching of Jesus. The title echoes the Gospel of John and signals Grose’s focus on speech as a guide to belief and conduct. He was also associated with the hymn Give of Your Best to the Master and compiled or contributed to hymn collections, linking his writing to congregational practice.
