About this book

Aliens or Americans? by Howard B. Grose is one of the Forward Mission Study Courses, with an introduction by Josiah Strong. A piece headed Unguarded Gates says that wide open and unguarded stand our gates, and through them presses a wild, motley throng. The text divides a city of ignorance by nationalities into wards, with an Italian ward of 100,000 far outnumbering all others, and gives Polish as 33,000 and Hebrew as 22,000.

Unskilled laborers, the text says, would fill a city of 430,000, or about the size of Cincinnati. The text says the Russian Jews usually come in great poverty, but do not stay poor very long. A list of entries includes Scotch as immigrants, with small illiteracy.
