Nehemiah Adams was a nineteenth-century American Congregational minister and author whose books addressed theology, bereavement, family life, and public controversy. Bertha and Her Baptism uses a family discussion to examine infant baptism and the religious responsibilities surrounding children. Catharine grew from Adams’s experience of grief after the death of his daughter and belongs to his pastoral writing on consolation and Christian hope. The sable cloud, published during the sectional crisis before the American Civil War, presents a southern tale with northern comments and reflects his controversial engagement with slavery and national debate. These works show markedly different parts of his career, from domestic religious instruction and memorial writing to political commentary. Adams served for many years as pastor of the Essex Street Church in Boston and published sermons and devotional works alongside longer books.
