Ian Maclaren was the literary name used by John Watson, a Scottish minister and writer associated with the Kailyard school of fiction. He became widely known for stories of rural Scottish life, including Beside the Bonnie Brier Bush, while publishing sermons and religious reflections from his experience in the Presbyterian ministry. The upper room examines episodes surrounding Christ’s final meal with his disciples and appeared in the Little Books on Religion series. The Homely Virtues gathers reflections on ordinary qualities of character, and Children of the Resurrection belongs to Watson’s later religious writing. Bibliographic records sometimes place these works under Watson’s legal name while retaining Maclaren on editions, making both names important to their publication history. He also wrote The Mind of the Master and The Potter’s Wheel, books that helped establish the devotional side of a career often remembered chiefly for Scottish fiction.
