About this book
A Doctor of the Old School by Ian Maclaren is divided into books, among them Book I, A General Practitioner, and Book II, Through the Flood. The text says Drumtochty was accustomed to break every law of health, except wholesome food and fresh air, and that its men made no difference in their clothes for summer or winter. Blacks were worn at a funeral, with nothing to cover them, out of respect to the deceased.
Drumsheugh keeps bringing up colder water from the spring, while MacLure kneels on the floor with his sleeves up, waiting on Saunders. As a coffin passes the stable door, a horse neighs within, and Jamie slips into the stable and goes up into the stall. The text says that death after all was victor, for the man that had saved them had not been able to save himself.
