J. Gresham Machen

J. Gresham Machen combined New Testament scholarship, Presbyterian ministry, and authorship during a career associated with Princeton Theological Seminary and the founding of Westminster Theological Seminary. Christianity and Liberalism, published by Macmillan in 1923, argues that modern theological liberalism differs fundamentally from historic Christianity rather than representing another form of the same faith. His earlier Recent Criticism of the Book of Acts appeared in the Princeton Theological Review in 1919 and evaluates contemporary scholarship on Acts. Together, the book and article show Machen working across public theological argument and close engagement with New Testament criticism. His writing is marked by carefully defined terms, sustained historical reasoning, and an effort to connect academic study with questions facing churches and ministers.
