Kaharoa, a rural stretch of New Zealand's Bay of Plenty, is where J. P. Pomare grew up. He is of Ngā Puhi descent and now writes crime fiction from Melbourne, beginning with Call Me Evie in 2018, which took the Ngaio Marsh Award for a debut. The Wrong Woman (2022) opens his Vince Reid series. An insurance company sends Reid, a private investigator, back to the town he left in disgrace to examine a car crash that killed a university professor and left his wife, Eshana Stiles, alive; two local girls are missing, and the chapters alternate between Reid's inquiry and Eshana's account of the months before the crash. Pomare's In the Clearing became the Disney+ series The Clearing, and The Last Guests became Stan's Watching You. He has hosted the On Writing podcast since 2015.
