J. S. Dewes reached novels by way of film and games, shooting independent productions as cinematographer, writing scripts for features and shorts, and taking a staff job writing and editing for big-budget science fiction video games. Her first book, The Last Watch, opened the Divide sequence for Tor in April 2021. It stations a legion of exiles, court-martialled soldiers and unwanted recruits at the literal edge of the universe, hands Adequin Rake command of the Argus with no supplies and no communications, and then lets that edge begin to collapse inward. The Exiled Fleet and The Relentless Legion continued the story, and Rubicon stands alone. Dewes still works in games.
