J. Wilhelm Rowntree

J. Wilhelm Rowntree joined business, religious reform, and adult education during a short but influential life in York. Born John Wilhelm Rowntree, he worked within his family's cocoa company while arguing for a more open, liberal direction within the Society of Friends. His activities included adult schools, the journal Present Day Papers, travel, and summer study programs. A History of the Adult School Movement, written with Henry Bryan Binns and published by Headley Brothers in 1903, traces the schools' development and discusses their organization, teaching, fellowship, and practical social role. The collaboration grew from direct participation in the movement, placing classroom methods beside Rowntree's broader concern with religious and civic renewal. He died in 1905.
