James Johonnot made natural history approachable for younger readers through his work as an American educator and textbook writer. Friends in Feathers and Fur was issued in 1885 as the second volume in his Natural History Reader sequence. Its fuller title, Friends in Feathers and Fur, and Other Neighbors: For Young Folks, signals the book’s broad survey of familiar animals rather than a narrow study of birds. Short chapters introduce creatures through observation, comparison, anecdote, and numerous illustrations, reflecting Johonnot’s belief that reading lessons could also cultivate curiosity about the living world. The volume followed Book of Cats and Dogs and sat alongside later readers about neighbors with wings and other forms of animal life. Modern New West Press editions retain the original illustrations and identify the work as Natural History Reader Book II. Friends in Feathers and Fur therefore belongs to Johonnot’s connected educational program, not to an unrelated collection of animal stories.
