Jan Karon
Jan Karon created the Mitford books around Episcopal priest Father Tim Kavanagh and the neighbors of a fictional North Carolina town. Before writing fiction full time, she built a successful career in advertising and began publishing Father Tim stories in a local newspaper. A Common Life revisits the wedding of Father Tim and Cynthia Coppersmith, placing the ceremony between events readers encountered in earlier Mitford novels. G. P. Putnam's Sons published the wedding story in 2001, and later paperback editions followed. Its compact form gathers familiar residents around Lord's Chapel while using missed arrangements, private worries, and community humor to illuminate the couple's long-awaited commitment. Karon has written fifteen Mitford novels as well as companion books and children's titles. She also founded the Mitford Museum in her former elementary school in Hudson, North Carolina. A Common Life serves as both a self-contained celebration and a connective episode within the broader chronology of Mitford.
