Janelle Brown
1973
Pretty Things alternates between a con artist and the heiress she has selected at a Lake Tahoe estate, and neither narrator is telling the reader everything. Brown covered technology through the first internet boom, which is where her earlier novels get their feel for money arriving and then leaving. All We Ever Wanted Was Everything follows a family whose fortune evaporates in an afternoon. The books are about class in California and about how much labour goes into looking wealthy.
