Jasper DeWitt

The Patient is narrated by a young psychiatrist taking a post at a decaying New England hospital, where a man admitted as a child has been on the ward for thirty years and every doctor who took an interest in him has come to harm.

DeWitt is a pen name. The novella started life on an internet horror forum and the escalation structure comes from that, with each session worse than the last.

It is short, and the ending divides readers, which is usually the fate of a story built entirely on withholding one fact.
