Jay Farrar
Jay Farrar is a songwriter, guitarist, and bandleader associated with Uncle Tupelo and Son Volt, groups central to the development of alternative country music. Falling Cars and Junkyard Dogs gathers autobiographical vignettes shaped by more than two decades of touring. The pieces return to Farrar's childhood in the Missouri Ozarks, his parents, musicians he encountered, changing landscapes, and the practical rhythms of life on the road. Photographs accompany the short recollections, which favor sharply observed moments over a continuous career narrative. Soft Skull published the collection in 2013. Farrar's method in the book resembles songwriting: a place, person, or remembered detail becomes the frame through which a wider experience is briefly visible. Farrar favors formative scenes and practical creative habits that carried into Son Volt and his later solo recordings.
