Gary Giddins is a jazz critic and biographer whose work connects musical detail with cultural history. Celebrating Bird examines the life, innovations, and continuing legend of saxophonist Charlie Parker, known as Bird. First published in the 1980s and later revised, the study follows Parker from Kansas City apprenticeship through artistic mastery and the demanding club worlds of New York and Los Angeles. Giddins draws on original material while challenging stories that accumulated around Parker after his early death. The University of Minnesota Press issued a revised edition in 2013 with a new introduction, selected discography, bibliography, and illustrations. Celebrating Bird is therefore both a musician’s life and an argument about how bebop altered American music. Giddins places Parker’s phrasing, influence, and working conditions within the wider history of jazz rather than isolating genius from circumstance. The book also reflects the critical method visible across Giddins’s writing on Louis Armstrong, Bing Crosby, film, and popular performance: close listening joined to biography and archival context.
