Searching for Sylvie Lee broadens that concern with belonging into a family mystery spanning the Netherlands, New York, and a Chinese immigrant household's history. Riverhead published Mambo in Chinatown, while William Morrow published Searching for Sylvie Lee. Kwok's close attention to code-switching, work, family obligation, and concealed histories gives each novel a distinct setting while linking both to her larger exploration of how people remake a home across cultures. Her debut, Girl in Translation, established similar interests in immigrant labor, education, language, and the demands that family members place on one another.
