Jenifer Ruff writes mystery, suspense, and medical thrillers built around investigations in which scientific evidence and human judgment carry equal weight. Only One Wave is the third novel in her FBI and CDC Medical Thrillers sequence, following Only Wrong Once and Only One Cure. Greyt Companion Press issued the first paperback edition in 2021. The story reunites CDC epidemiologist Madeline Hamilton and FBI operative Quinn Traynor after a tsunami devastates the fictional Pacific island of Nalowale. A strange illness spreads among survivors, communications are cut, and the pair must determine whether the crisis is natural or engineered. Ruff uses quarantine, damaged infrastructure, and limited information to narrow the characters’ options while keeping the medical inquiry central. Although the novel continues an established partnership, it is structured to be read independently. The expanded title used by several series records, Only One Wave: The Tsunami Effect, sets it apart from unrelated works and makes its disaster setting explicit. Ruff’s later thrillers continue her preference for resourceful investigators facing high-consequence uncertainty.
