Jennifer Castle
Jennifer Castle writes fiction for younger readers about identity, friendship, and the gap between a public image and a private life. You Look Different in Real Life follows Justine and four classmates who have appeared in documentary films every five years since kindergarten. At sixteen, Justine doubts that the person viewers remember matches who she has become, and the group eventually resists the director's plan for their third film. HarperTeen’s 2013 edition uses a documentary premise recalling the long-running British Up series while giving each fictional participant a distinct conflict. Castle also wrote The Beginning of After and What Happens Now, and later expanded into children's nonfiction and series fiction. You Look Different in Real Life shows her interest in adolescence as revision rather than simple discovery: the five friends must decide what belongs on camera, what remains theirs, and whether they can shape a story that others began telling about them years earlier.
