Joel Chandler Harris
Joel Chandler Harris was a Georgia journalist, fiction writer, and folklorist whose best-known work grew from stories he heard during his youth and later reshaped for print. Uncle Remus shortens the full title Uncle Remus, His Songs and His Sayings, issued by D. Appleton in 1880 and dated 1881 on some copies. The volume brings together plantation legends, proverbs, songs, and the voice of Harris's fictional storyteller. Brer Rabbit and the other animal figures draw on African American trickster traditions, while Harris's framing and representation of dialect remain central to modern discussion of the books. He continued developing these characters across several later volumes, including Nights with Uncle Remus and Told by Uncle Remus. Harris also spent many years at the Atlanta Constitution, joining journalism with regional fiction. Readers approaching Uncle Remus today therefore encounter both an influential body of American folklore and a complicated act of literary adaptation shaped by its postwar Southern setting.
