John Fried
John Fried brings experience in magazine editing and teaching to his American fiction. The Martin Chronicles, his debut novel, follows Martin Kelso from age eleven to seventeen on Manhattan's Upper West Side during the 1980s. Grand Central Publishing issued the book, whose episodic structure turns school, friendship, family loss, and first relationships into stages of a coming-of-age narrative. Fried earned an MFA from Warren Wilson College's Program for Writers and has taught creative writing at Duquesne University. Before teaching, he worked as a writer and editor in New York, contributing journalism to publications including Time, Rolling Stone, New York, and The New York Times Magazine. His short fiction has appeared in the Gettysburg Review, North American Review, and Columbia Journal. Fried has explained that the novel grew from separate stories about Marty until their shared arc became clear. That origin accounts for the book's linked-chapter form and its focus on changing perceptions rather than a single continuous adventure.
