John Hodgman

1971

John Hodgman is a writer, humorist, actor, and podcast host whose essays turn uncertainty into comic observation. Medallion Status follows the period after his television visibility began to fade, when invitations, airport lounges, and minor privileges became measures of an unstable public identity. The 2019 Viking edition carries the subtitle True Stories from Secret Rooms. Hodgman examines status without presenting fame as glamour. He studies the awkward spaces between being recognized and being ignored, between receiving special access and returning to ordinary routines. The essays move through family travel, performance, encounters at cultural events, and efforts to understand what remains when a familiar role disappears. Hodgman had already developed this blend of invented authority and candid autobiography in books such as The Areas of My Expertise and Vacationland. Medallion Status brings the voice closer to memoir, using specific rooms, objects, and social rituals to explore aging, usefulness, embarrassment, and gratitude. Its comedy depends on reflection, but the emotional center is a writer learning to value connection over rank.
