Author: John Huston Finley
John Huston Finley was an American educator, editor, author, and civic leader. In Christianity and Problems of to-Day, he contributed the opening lecture, “From Generation to Generation,” to a collection delivered at Lake Forest College in 1921. Charles Scribner’s Sons published the volume the following year as part of the Bross Library. Finley’s address considers education as the transmission of knowledge and responsibility between generations, fitting a career spent in academic and public institutions. He led Knox College and the College of the City of New York, then served as New York State Commissioner of Education and president of the University of the State of New York. Archival records at the New York Public Library trace his later Times work from 1921 to 1938. The book also includes lectures by Charles Foster Kent, Robert Bruce Taylor, Paul Elmer More, and Jeremiah Whipple Jenks, placing Finley within a collaborative discussion of religion and public life.
