John J. McGuire produced a small but distinctive body of American science fiction, frequently in collaboration with H. Beam Piper. Null-ABC first appeared in the February and March 1953 issues of Astounding Science Fiction and later reached book form as Crisis in 2140. The story imagines a future society where literacy belongs to a professional elite and is distrusted by a majority calling itself Illiterate. Senator Chester Pelton’s campaign against the Literates becomes entangled with his family and with wider struggles over education, information, and political power. McGuire and Piper share the byline, making the novel central to their joint body of work. The premise turns reading into a contested social institution rather than a neutral skill. Readers encounter social science fiction concerned with expertise, public resentment, and the ways control of knowledge shapes civic life. Its invented division asks what happens when a society needs trained readers for its systems while teaching most citizens to regard those same specialists with suspicion.
