John Lothrop Motley

John Lothrop Motley (1814-1877) was an American historian and diplomat who served as minister to Austria and later to Britain. Schooled in Germany alongside Bismarck, he abandoned fiction for the Dutch archives, and his histories of the Netherlands made his name on both sides of the Atlantic.
