Joseph Addison was an English essayist, poet, dramatist, and statesman who helped shape early eighteenth-century periodical prose. The fragment The Poetical Works of appears as the book title here, although historical editions complete it by naming Addison and sometimes join his verse with other poets. His poetry includes public, devotional, and occasional writing formed by classical education and political life. Addison is better known for collaborating with Richard Steele on The Spectator, whose essays influenced English style and social commentary. His tragedy Cato also circulated widely in Britain and America. Oxford study, diplomatic travel, and government office gave him subjects that crossed literature and civic affairs. Addison's verse belongs beside those achievements rather than outside them. It reveals the same preference for clarity, balance, moral reflection, and carefully controlled argument that readers associate with his essays, while adapting those qualities to formal poetic occasions.
