Henry Vaughan was a seventeenth-century Welsh poet, translator, physician, and devotional writer associated with the metaphysical tradition. The Mount of Olives, published in 1652, gathers prose prayers and meditations shaped for private worship during a period when Anglican public practice faced political restriction. Its daily offices and church-centered devotions draw on the language of the Book of Common Prayer, while adapting communal forms to solitary use. Vaughan's better-known verse collection, Silex Scintillans, appeared in 1650 and was enlarged in 1655. His religious writing was deeply influenced by George Herbert, whose example helped redirect Vaughan from early secular poetry toward devotional work. He also published Poems, Olor Iscanus, Flores Solitudinis, and the later collection Thalia Rediviva. Across those works, images of light, water, childhood, landscape, and renewal connect spiritual reflection with the Usk Valley environment in which he lived and practiced medicine.
