Jules Michelet brought a historian's imagination to Joan Of Arc, a compact narrative drawn from his larger History of France. Writing in nineteenth-century France, he presented Joan as a figure of courage whose mission, military success, abandonment, imprisonment, and martyrdom revealed tensions among monarchy, church authority, and the people. Michelet's prose does not behave like a detached chronicle. It reconstructs scenes, emphasizes feeling, and turns the Maid of Orléans into an emblem of national memory shaped from below. English readers have encountered the work through more than one edition. John Henry Ketcham contributed the Introductory Sketch and notes to the 1900 edition, while Albert Guérard later produced the first complete English rendering, published by the University of Michigan Press in its Ann Arbor Paperbacks series. Guérard's edition appeared in 1969 and runs 152 pages. The book's continuing interest comes from the union of historical narrative and literary portraiture: Michelet interprets archival events while making Joan's solitude, conviction, and public meaning central to the story.
