About this book

This is the English translation of Michelet's La Sorcière, whose title page reads The Witch of the Middle Ages, by L. J. Trotter, London, 1863, and calls itself the only authorized English translation. In his preface the translator says he has tried to recast the author's trenchant humour, scornful eloquence and epigrammatic dash, and that he has slurred or slightly altered a few passages that French readers take as a thing of course.

In one passage the Witch calls the child 'Robin mine', after Robin Hood, and fond names such as Little Green and Greenwood. Another quotes Remy, a judge of Nancy, in a work he dedicated in 1596 to the Cardinal of Lorraine, and mentions Boguet, a layman the lords of Saint Claude asked to sit in judgment on their own people in the Jura. Footnote numbers in square brackets run through the text.

About the author

Jules Michelet

Jules Michelet brought a historian's imagination to Joan Of Arc, a compact narrative drawn from his larger History of France. Writing in nineteenth-century France, he presented Joan as a figure of courage whose mission, military success, abandonment, imprisonment, and martyrdom revealed tensions among monarchy, church authority, and the people.
