Karen Chance taught history at university level in New Orleans, and has also lived in France, Britain and Hong Kong. Orlando was her childhood home and she later settled back in Florida, and the history training feeds the Cassandra Palmer books, whose central character moves through time. Touch the Dark introduced Cassie in 2006: a clairvoyant raised by a vampire crime boss who inherits the office of Pythia, chief seer of the supernatural world. Claimed by Shadow is the second in that sequence and Hunt the Moon the fifth. A Family Affair, a novella slotted between the fourth book and the fifth, hands the story to the war mage John Pritkin and to the bargain his demon father tries to strike over him; Chance published it on her own website. She has written full time since 2008, and a linked series follows the dhampir Dorina Basarab.
