Will Sparrow’s Road follows a runaway boy in Elizabethan England who joins a traveling troupe of performers and people displayed as curiosities. Will begins as wary, hungry, and practiced at protecting himself, but life on the road gradually tests his assumptions about difference, loyalty, and belonging. Clarion's 2012 edition introduced the novel. Cushman builds the period through markets, inns, language, labor, and entertainment rather than using history as a distant backdrop. The troupe gives Will a provisional community while also exposing the harsh bargains by which vulnerable people survive. That tension keeps his growth grounded in material circumstances as well as friendship. The audiobook features Katherine Kellgren, an experienced performer of historical children's fiction. Will Sparrow’s Road fits Cushman's larger body of work through a young protagonist constructing a chosen place in an unforgiving society.
