Karen Kelly centers her fiction on family history and the meanings places acquire across generations. Bethlehem builds a family story around the industrial history of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. St. Martin's Publishing Group released the novel in 2019. The narrative alternates between the 1920s and the 1960s, following Susannah Parrish Collier and her daughter-in-law Joanna Rafferty Collier as old choices reshape the present. Kelly drew inspiration from visits to Bethlehem while her daughters attended Lehigh University and from reading about the city's steel industry. Rather than presenting industrial history as background alone, she uses it to define the ambitions, wealth, and private pressures surrounding two connected families. Bethlehem combines domestic drama, historical fiction, and mystery, with an ancestral home serving as the point where generations meet. Kelly's focus remains on how women interpret inherited stories and decide what responsibility they owe to the past. The novel's title therefore names both a Pennsylvania city and the emotional landscape created by its industrial legacy.
