Kate Mosse places family stories inside periods of religious conflict, migration and political upheaval. Originally published by Mantle, The City of Tears is the second volume in the four-book Joubert Family Chronicles, following The Burning Chambers and preceding The Ghost Ship and The Map of Bones. The novel carries the Joubert family from sixteenth-century France toward Amsterdam during the Wars of Religion. Mosse’s other historical fiction includes the Languedoc trilogy of Labyrinth, Sepulchre and Citadel, while her nonfiction covers family care and women’s history. She is also a founder director of the Women’s Prize for Fiction and has written for the stage. Across those forms, Mosse returns to histories shaped by family memory, conflict and the movement of people between places.
