Tehlor Kay Mejia
1986
Tehlor Kay Mejia writes fantasy for middle-grade and teenage readers, shaped by folklore, friendship and the pressure of community expectations. Paola Santiago and the River of Tears opens a series about a science-minded twelve-year-old whose search for her missing friend leads into the legends she had dismissed. The Rick Riordan Presents imprint released it in 2020. Mejia co-wrote Miss Meteor with Anna-Marie McLemore; that novel follows two former friends who reunite around a small-town pageant and questions of belonging. The collaboration is essential to the book’s authorship. Mejia’s wider work includes We Set the Dark on Fire and its sequel, We Unleash the Merciless Storm. Across age ranges, her stories draw on Latin American folklore, friendship and community.
