What I Was Doing While You Were Breeding is a memoir of spending a whole decade travelling alone between American sitcom writing jobs while every friend married and had children, and its value is that it is honest about the lonely parts rather than only the good stories. Newman wrote for television for years and the timing shows on the page. It was widely read as a defence of refusing to settle down, and is a great deal more ambivalent than that reading allows.
