Laura Ballance

Laura Ballance helped shape American independent music as a cofounder of Merge Records and a member of Superchunk. Our Noise records that history through an oral account created with fellow Merge founder Mac McCaughan and writer John Cook. Ballance's perspective matters because the label grew from a small North Carolina project into the home of artists including Neutral Milk Hotel, Spoon, and Arcade Fire, while Superchunk remained part of the same creative community. Exclaim calls the work a candid label history assembled from interviews, and Ballance's agency profile confirms her founding role and authorship. Rather than treating a record company as an abstract business, the book follows practical decisions, friendships, touring culture, and the tension between independence and growth. Our Noise under Laura Ballance's name offers a participant's view of Merge Records, strengthened by collaborators who experienced its development from different positions inside the label and its surrounding music scene.
