Andrew Earles documents independent rock as a music journalist and author through biography, criticism, and reference writing. Hüsker Dü traces the Minneapolis trio formed by Bob Mould, Grant Hart, and Greg Norton, following its move from the hardcore scene toward a melodic sound that influenced alternative rock. Voyageur Press brought out the 2010 volume as Hüsker Dü: The Story of the Noise-Pop Pioneers Who Launched Modern Rock. Earles draws on interviews, a discography, and the band's recording history, placing albums such as Zen Arcade, New Day Rising, Flip Your Wig, and Candy Apple Grey within a compact but consequential career. Reviewers noted that it was the first full-length book devoted to the group. Earles later published Gimme Indie Rock, a guide to five hundred essential American underground records from 1981 to 1996. The two projects share an archival impulse: both connect releases to scenes, labels, and changing musical practices. His Hüsker Dü volume remains a focused account of the band's development and legacy.
